Ukrainian drones strike Sberbank data center – Russian AI drive under threat

Ukrainian drones have struck Russia’s largest data center, which is owned by major bank Sberbank. The attack in Balakovo follows three attacks on data centers belonging to technology company Yandex over the past week, Reuters reports

Sberbank confirms the attack but says that the bank’s systems and services are operating normally.

The data center in Balakovo is planned to house Russia’s largest supercomputer, which is expected to become operational in 2027. Yandex’s three attacked data centers include the company’s three supercomputers. It is still unclear whether any of them have been damaged.

The supercomputers are used to train AI models. Any damage could hamper Russia’s AI development, which is already being limited by Western sanctions on advanced technology.
