The UK telecommunications regulator Ofcom has launched separate investigations into Ericsson’s subsidiaries Vonage and Voxbone following concerns that telephone numbers for which the companies are responsible have been misused, including in connection with fraud. This is stated in a press release.
The authority will examine whether the companies have met the requirements to counter misuse of telephone numbers transferred to other companies or private individuals.
The rules require, among other things, customer checks and ongoing monitoring to prevent numbers from being used for fraudulent calls and scam messages. Ofcom will now collect additional information.
Ericsson bought Vonage for SEK 63 billion in 2021. The value of the business, which sells cloud-based communications services to companies, has since been written down substantially.
