Spain’s opposition leader calls for naval deployment to Ceuta

Spain’s opposition leader Alberto Núñez Feijóo, leader of the conservative Partido Popular, is calling for the country’s navy to be sent to Ceuta following unconfirmed reports that a Moroccan patrol boat had been in Spanish waters. He also wants Morocco’s ambassador to be summoned and Spain’s ambassador recalled for consultations, Politico reports.

The demand comes ahead of the snap election on 29 November and after more than 70,000 migrants arrived in Ceuta in July. Spain’s Guardia Civil has denied the reports about the Moroccan patrol boat. At the same time, tensions between Spain and Morocco have increased over Ceuta and Melilla, which Morocco considers occupied territories.
