According to US intelligence assessments, Russia is preparing an escalation involving drones targeting countries around the Mediterranean. El Mundo reports this, citing intelligence information and an anonymous source close to Lithuania’s Ministry of Defence.
According to the information, drones could be launched from ships and concealed in containers. The newspaper describes the plans against the backdrop of a growing Russian sabotage campaign in Europe and refers, among other things, to a drone incident at Leipzig Airport that German authorities are reportedly said to have linked to Russian intelligence.
Potential targets identified are Spain, France and Italy.
The information emerged the other day and was highlighted more broadly in the media yesterday evening.
