Sources: EU plans new rules to reduce dependence on China – BN

The European Commission is preparing changes to the rules for the single market, worth around 18 trillion euros, to reduce dependence on countries including China and make it easier for European companies to diversify their supply chains. Bloomberg News reports this, citing sources.

The proposals include changes to rules on vehicle approvals, foreign subsidies, forced labor and trade secrets.

A broader package of measures is expected to be presented by mid-December at the latest and will also give the EU greater scope to quickly restrict imports in trade policy conflicts.

The EU is also considering import caps or tariffs on Chinese products in, among others, the chemicals, furniture and machinery industries from the beginning of 2027.

The measures come as the EU’s trade deficit with China amounted to 360 billion euros last year.

Dialogue and negotiations with Beijing are to remain a central part of the strategy.
