Sjømatbedriftene calls for abolishing VAT on fish and seafood

Norwegian Sjømatbedriftene is urging the government and the Storting to abolish VAT on fish and seafood in connection with the 2027 state budget. The organisation believes the measure would lower food prices and help more people follow the health authorities’ dietary guidelines.

The parties FrP, Sp and Rødt have proposed cutting Norwegian food VAT from the current 15 to 10 percent. Sjømatbedriftene wants to go further and abolish VAT on fish and seafood altogether, or alternatively reduce it to 5 percent as a first step.

The organisation also points out that total support for Norwegian agriculture, according to research and analyses, exceeds NOK 30 billion per year and calls for a better balance between land- and sea-based food production.
