Reports: US seeks to streamline approvals of new tobacco products – WSJ

The Trump administration plans to change the regulatory framework to be able to approve more tobacco products more quickly, including flavored e-cigarettes and nicotine pouches, for the US market. The Wall Street Journal reports this, citing sources.

The FDA is expected shortly to announce that the agency will review rules from 2021 for applications for new tobacco products. Possible changes include simplified requirements for scientific studies and shorter processing times.

According to the reports, the administration wants to make it easier for products deemed less harmful alternatives to cigarettes to reach the market. In 2026, the FDA has already approved additional e-cigarettes and nicotine pouches, while the agency continues to take action against products sold without marketing authorization.

Public health organizations have meanwhile objected that flavored products could increase their appeal among young people.
