Danish pharmaceutical company Novo Nordisk is cutting the price of the obesity drug Wegovy by 20 percent in Sweden as of today, October 1. The cut applies to the 1.7 and 2.4 milligram doses, which are used during most of the treatment period, the company writes in a press release.
According to the company, this means savings of around SEK 500 or more per month for patients, depending on the dose. Wegovy is not covered by the reimbursement system, and pharmacies set their own consumer prices, which is why Novo hopes the price reduction will be passed on to patients.
At the same time, the company is continuing its dialogue with TLV and the regions regarding reimbursement for a smaller group of patients with severe obesity and a high risk of serious comorbidities.
– As a company, Novo is taking clear responsibility here and now by lowering the price for everyone who pays for their treatment out of pocket. At the same time, out-of-pocket payment can never replace the principle of equal healthcare and society’s overall responsibility for health and medical care. That is why we recently submitted a renewed reimbursement application so that people with severe obesity can be offered treatment with a high-cost protection scheme, says Jørgen Kronborg Jungersen, CEO of Novo Sweden.
