Meta challenges UK regulator over fines and fees

Facebook owner Meta has turned to a UK court to challenge regulator Ofcom’s methods for calculating fees and fines under the country’s Online Safety Act. Reuters reports this.

Meta believes the calculations should be based on UK revenue rather than global revenue. The law gives Ofcom the right to issue fines of up to 10 percent of qualifying global turnover or 18 million pounds, whichever amount is higher.

Ofcom is defending the method and points out that actual fines must be proportionate to the violation. The dispute comes as the regulator is also reviewing Meta’s risk assessment of a feature on Instagram.
