Leading European stock exchanges are rising ahead of Tuesday’s close. Sentiment is supported by hopes of diplomatic progress in the Iran war, which was reflected during the day in a falling oil price.
The broad European Stoxx 600 index was up 0.42 percent at 644.60 at 16:08. During the day, the index has traded within a range of down 0.31 percent at the low and up 0.59 percent at the high.
By sector, retail is performing best, up 3.17 percent, while travel & leisure is recording the second-best performance, up 2.23 percent.
Telecommunications is performing worst, down 1.51 percent, while insurance is recording the second-weakest performance, down 1.15 percent.
Iran has offered to reopen the Strait of Hormuz within seven days if the US lifts its blockade of Iranian ports and ceases military operations around the strait. Kyodo News reports this, citing a senior Iranian government source.
Saudi Arabia has restarted its east-west oil pipeline and could resume exports from the Red Sea port of Yanbu later on Tuesday, according to Reuters. The pipeline has been closed since September 13 following drone attacks and, before the shutdown, was used to transport around 4 million barrels of oil per day past the Strait of Hormuz.
UBS expects improved performance in the third quarter compared with the previous year, with continued strong activity in both wealth management and transactions. However, performance is not expected to be as strong as during the unusually strong third quarter of 2025, CEO Sergio Ermotti says, according to Bloomberg News. The stock is down 2.7 percent.
IT consulting company Digia is down just over 6 percent after the company cut its forecast for EBIT in 2026 and now expects earnings below last year’s 21.3 million euros. Previously, the forecast was for earnings to be at or above the 2025 level.
Industrial group Smiths Group increased revenue by 2.1 percent to 1,937 million pounds for the full year, while organic growth was 1.2 percent. Adjusted operating profit increased by 2.7 percent to 399 million pounds. The stock is up 6.5 percent.
Swiss pharmaceutical giant Roche is down 0.4 percent. The company reports positive results from a phase 2 study of enicepatide in adults with type 2 diabetes and overweight or obesity.
Danish wind power company Vestas has received two new orders totaling 246 megawatts, according to the company’s website. One order covers 198 megawatts in North America for an unnamed project. In addition, Vestas has received a 48-megawatt order in Germany. The stock is down 1 percent.
French banking giant BNP Paribas has hired Goldman Sachs to sell the Spanish operations of consumer credit company Cetelem. The bank is targeting a price above 1 billion euros, Cinco Días reports, citing sources in the financial industry. The stock is up 1 percent.
Germany’s leading economic institutes raise their forecast for the country’s GDP growth in 2026 to 1.3 percent, from 0.6 percent previously, according to Reuters sources. For 2027, the forecast is raised to 1.1 percent from 0.9 percent previously.
