Companies could become an important driver behind rapidly growing demand for sustainable aviation fuel, SAF. By 2030, their purchases could amount to between 1.0 and 1.9 million tonnes, compared with an estimated 323,000 tonnes in 2024, according to a study by IATA, Airbus and Accenture.
Only around 15 percent of the companies surveyed currently purchase SAF certificates. Most are awaiting lower prices, clearer rules on how emissions reductions may be reported and easier purchasing.
Global SAF production is expected to amount to around 2.4 million tonnes in 2026, equivalent to 0.8 percent of total aviation fuel use. Broader corporate demand could, according to the study, help share the cost of aviation’s transition and give producers stronger incentives to expand capacity.
