Globalfoundries to play key role in US-Japan semiconductor initiative

Globalfoundries has been selected as the technology provider and operator for two new semiconductor fabs in Malta, New York, as part of a US-Japan initiative worth up to 21 billion dollars. This is stated in a press release.

Japan will provide the investment, while Globalfoundries will contribute technology, manufacturing expertise and operations.

An initial investment of around 10 billion dollars will finance a new 300-millimeter fab expected to begin operations in 2029. A further approximately 10 billion dollars could go toward a second fab. The first facility is expected to add around 900,000 wafers in annual capacity, and a second fab would provide roughly the same amount.

Globalfoundries has also reached an agreement with the US Department of Commerce to reallocate 955 million dollars from an existing Chips Act grant to, among other things, silicon photonics, SiGe and advanced packaging. Under a separate agreement, the Department of Commerce will receive around 4 percent of the shares in Globalfoundries.
