The European Commission is considering postponing new methane rules for oil and gas imports by one year to 2028 to reduce risks to energy supplies and prices. Energy Commissioner Dan Jørgensen tells Bloomberg News.
The rules have been criticized by energy companies and exporting countries, including the United States, which have warned of disruptions to supplies.
Jørgensen also points to the uncertainty surrounding the Strait of Hormuz and high energy prices ahead of winter.
From 2030, imports exceeding the EU’s threshold values for methane intensity may be subject to sanctions. Jørgensen emphasizes that a postponement does not mean lowering climate ambitions.
