EU Commission seeks to release EUR 4.2 billion to Hungary

The EU Commission proposes releasing EUR 4.2 billion in frozen funds to Hungary and restoring the country’s universities’ full access to Erasmus+ and Horizon Europe, according to a press release.

The Commission assesses that Hungary has addressed the previously identified shortcomings concerning, among other things, public procurement, corruption, conflicts of interest and the prosecution service.

The proposal means that the safeguards introduced in 2022 will be lifted and must now be considered by the EU Council of Ministers, which has one month to make a decision.
