Denmark says that a new agreement on Greenland will mean that responsibility for security in the Arctic will to a greater extent be handled by NATO, rather than solely by Denmark and the United States. Reuters reports.
The agreement is expected to be signed at the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Tuesday and, according to Denmark and Greenland, will respect the island’s sovereignty.
US President Donald Trump claims that the agreement gives the United States “permanent control” over security and other needs in Greenland.
Denmark and Greenland have not commented on the claim.
The agreement follows months of US demands for greater control over the self-governing Danish territory.
