China and US hold first talks on AI

China and the US have held talks on artificial intelligence for the first time and discussed tariff cuts as well as an extension of the current trade agreement, CNBC reports, citing China’s Ministry of Commerce.

The talks were held between Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng and US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent in New York ahead of the meeting between Presidents Xi Jinping and Donald Trump.

Bessent said on Wednesday that the countries had agreed to extend the trade truce until January. The parties have also discussed a dialogue on AI and a mechanism to warn each other about AI-related risks.
