BHP close to deal to avert strike at world’s largest copper mine

Mining giant BHP Group is close to reaching an agreement with the union at the Escondida copper mine in Chile, which could avert a planned strike. Reuters and Bloomberg News report this, citing union chairman Alexis Barrera, who says an agreement is essentially finalized.

Negotiations continued after the overnight deadline, despite the union having previously announced a strike from Wednesday morning. A new offer must be approved by the union’s just over 1,000 members, equivalent to around one-quarter of the mine’s direct employees.

The union is demanding higher wages and a monthly production bonus and has previously rejected the company’s offer of a one-off bonus of approximately 25,500 dollars per employee as insufficient.
