Argentine President Javier Milei is giving the companies behind the Sea Lion oil project off the Falkland Islands two weeks to halt drilling. Otherwise, Argentina will turn to the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea and request a temporary halt, Sky News reports.
Milei claims that the project is illegally exploiting Argentine resources and has at the same time reiterated the country’s sovereignty claim over the Falkland Islands.
The United Kingdom, for its part, emphasizes the islanders’ right to self-determination and to remain British.
The project is being developed by Israel’s Navitas Petroleum and the UK’s Rockhopper Exploration.
