The Canadian province of British Columbia is suing OpenAI and CEO Sam Altman following the school shooting in Tumbler Ridge in February, in which nine people were killed. This is stated by the province’s Attorney General Niki Sharma in a statement.
The lawsuit, filed in federal court in San Francisco, claims that the attack could have been prevented if OpenAI had alerted police about the shooter’s use of ChatGPT to plan the attack. According to the lawsuit, OpenAI’s safety team had flagged conversations about gun violence but did not contact the authorities.
The province is seeking damages for, among other things, reconstruction and care services, as well as changes to how OpenAI handles conversations that could lead to violence.
