Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni wants to introduce a 26 percent exit tax on capital gains for people with assets exceeding 800,000 euros who move abroad. Bloomberg reports.
The proposal is part of the government’s 26 billion euro budget and comes ahead of the next election, while rising inflation and living costs are fuelling discontent.
The tax is expected to generate 3.7 million euros for the state in the first year and will mainly cover financial assets and crypto investments.
The proposal must be approved by parliament and has raised concerns that it could deter wealthy individuals from settling in Italy.
