Chinese memory chipmaker CXMT plans to begin limited production of HBM3E memory for AI chips within two months, despite a yield of only 20-30 percent, sources tell Reuters. The corresponding level at market-leading SK Hynix is reportedly around 70 percent.
CXMT is moving ahead despite the low yield because of China’s shortage of advanced AI memory. The company has sent samples to several Chinese AI chipmakers.
At the same time, tests show that CXMT’s HBM3E is closer in performance to SK Hynix’s older HBM3 than to its HBM3E. CXMT had 10 percent of the global DRAM market in the second quarter, while SK Hynix accounted for 50 percent of global HBM sales.
