Chinese hackers have posed as US AI experts in an attempt to steal login credentials from people at think tanks and universities, among others. Reuters reports this, citing cybersecurity company Proofpoint.
The group, which Proofpoint calls TA419, has among other things posed as former White House official Lynne Parker and lured recipients with AI-related collaborations before directing them to password-stealing websites.
According to Proofpoint, the focus indicates Chinese intelligence interest in US AI policy. China has long denied engaging in cyberespionage.
