Boeing wins massive contract for US Navy’s next fighter jet

Boeing has been selected by the US Navy to develop and build the next-generation F/A-XX fighter aircraft in a contract worth more than 20 billion dollars, equivalent to SEK 200 billion. This is stated in a press release.

The aircraft will eventually replace the Navy’s F/A-18 Super Hornet.

Boeing won the procurement ahead of Northrop Grumman, while Lockheed Martin left the process last year. The F/A-XX will be the Navy’s first sixth-generation fighter and is expected to enter service in the 2030s.

The contract is Boeing’s second major sixth-generation fighter program after the company was selected in 2025 for the US Air Force’s F-47. Boeing will thus supply next-generation tactical fighter aircraft to both the Navy and the Air Force.

Boeing says investments have been made in new production facilities, technology and personnel to enable it to operate several advanced fighter programs in parallel. Technical and program-related details about the F/A-XX remain classified.
