Sales of residential heat pumps increased 11 percent during the first half of 2026 in twelve European countries, including Sweden. Around 1.16 million units were sold in total, compared with 1.05 million in the same period last year, according to the industry association European Heat Pump Association, EHPA.
The industry association points to rising oil and gas prices following the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, as well as lower electricity taxes in some countries, as contributing factors to the increase during the first half of the year. The European Commission has meanwhile put forward measures to reduce the tax disparity between electricity and gas and make electrification more competitive.
EHPA states that countries where electricity is taxed relatively more heavily than gas have generally had a slower transition to heat pumps.
The countries included in the statistics are Austria, Belgium, Switzerland, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal and Sweden.
